Saddle stitch or perfect binding?
Saddle stitch means the sheets are folded in half and stapled through the spine. It’s the economical choice for event programmes, product catalogues and annual reports up to 52 pages, and the booklet opens flat.
Perfect binding glues the pages into a square spine wrapped by the cover, like a paperback. It’s for thicker books from 56 to 104 pages, such as manuals, yearbooks and company profiles. A perfect-bound cover must be 260gsm or 310gsm art card, because a thinner cover can’t hold the glued spine.
Counting pages
Page counts go up in fours, because each folded sheet makes four pages. The count includes the cover: a 16-page booklet is a 4-page cover plus 12 inner pages. If your file comes out at 18 pages, add two blank or notes pages to reach 20, or cut it down to 16.
Choosing paper
For saddle-stitched books, the inner paper is matched to the cover and the inner pages are never heavier than the cover. The form only shows combinations that work. Simili is uncoated, so it’s good for workbooks and forms people write on. Art paper is coated, so photos and solid colours print sharper.
Cover lamination is available on 157gsm covers and heavier. On saddle-stitched books you can laminate one or both sides of the cover. Perfect-bound covers are laminated on the outer face only. Covers in 80, 105 and 128gsm are supplied unlaminated.
Artwork tips for booklets
- Supply a single PDF with pages in reading order, one page per page, not printed spreads.
- Keep a 25mm safe margin on the binding side. On perfect-bound books, text close to the spine disappears into the glued fold.
- Add 2mm bleed on every outside edge. See our print bleed guide.
- Keep total ink coverage at or below 240% so dark pages don’t stick together or set off onto the facing page.
